Acting Education Minister James Marape has warned schools not to charge project fees over K200.
Mr. Marape said School Boards, on the pretext of project fees, have abused funds over the years with nothing to show on the ground.
The National Education Board has set standards for all schools, a policy that is expected to be followed nationwide, by all schools.
The Government’s Free Education Policy has seen its ups and downs.
One positive outcome is that, parents and guardians don’t have to pay school fees, a burden lifted off their shoulders.
However, many school boards have been charging hefty school project fees, a concern that was raised in parliament by the Member for Usino Bundi, Anton Yagama.
The only school in his electorate is charging K500 Project Fees.
Acting Education Minister James Marape told parliament that the National Education Board has set the maximum amount for project fees at K200.
This means parents shouldn’t pay more than this amount.
Member for Kabwum, Bob Dadae, queried whether the maximum amount was set for a certain level of education.
However, Minister Marape said it’s for all levels but special consideration will be made for schools with urgent infrastructure needs.
Mr. Marape will be directing his Officers to issue circulars to all schools regarding the Policy Directive.
Schools found charging over K200 Project Fees will see their school boards dissolved.
