The people of Central Province are calling on the police hierarchy to investigate the alleged misconduct and abuse by policemen conducting traffic checks along the Magi Highway.
This follows an incident where a man of Central and Milne Bay was allegedly assaulted by drunk on duty policemen, believed to be from the New Guinea Islands Region. The incident took place on Saturday 26th April, 2014, along the Magi Highway just one kilometre from the Gabagaba turn off.
The Victim Liba Elijah was driving a blue Landcruiser 10 seater and heading for Port Moresby. On board were family members and a netball umpire. The policemen at gun – point, stopped the vehicle and bashed the driver and verbally abused the passengers. The female passengers were threatened that they would be raped.
Former Trade Unionist Rueben Elijah, whose brother was the victim, wants the officers to be arrested immediately, as the policemen on duty were in unmarked police vehicles.
The vehicles conducting the road blocks included a brown Toyota Landcruiser 10 Seater, registration BDV 160 and a white Landcruiser registration BDY 401.
The family has reported the matter to the NCD Metropolitan Police Commander, and arrests are expected soon.
