Concerns over Safety Gear for Power Plant Workers

By Eric Haurupma – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Workers from the Hanjung Power Plant in Port Moresby’say that the quality of protective gear used at their workplace is not up to standard.

The workers allege that their safety is at risk because they are exposed to toxic chemicals used during power operations.

EMTV News arrived today to see workers uniforms soaked in dirt, grease and oil, while they worked on the plant’s heavy machinery.

Over 20 PNG nationals and 10 foreigners working at the multi-million Kina power plant say they lack proper safety gear.

Hanjung Power Plant is supplying 66,000 volts of electricity and has high effects of radiation, which is harmful to workers.

Naka Zeripe said after coming into contact with sulfuric acid, he was given K50 to seek treatment and to return the change.

The workers carry on their work without hand gloves and earmuffs, proper safety boots and work tirelessly to operate this main power live line to Port Moresby city.

They are calling on authorities to look into this issue. EMTV News will attempt to contact Hanjung management for a response tomorrow.
