University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) administration yesterday released a statement explaining the police presence at its Waigani and Taurama campuses. They say that it is to maintain the safety of staff, and give assurance to those students who are attempting to resume their studies.
Professor Albert Mellam, Vice Chancellor of UPNG, said the arrangement is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to return normalcy, and not to suppress students’ democratic rights.
The administration said parents have expressed their concerns over the boycotting of classes.
They said circumstances that have evolved over the past week will again be addressed by the Senate Standing Committee before the end of this week, to determine the next course of action in relation to the conduct of 2016 academic programs.
