Cabinet has endorsed a plan to pump water from Mt Giluwe in Southern Highlands province that would see water piped and supplied to outback areas of Australia.
Minister for National Planning, Charles Abel, says that with an abundance of water in the Highlands region, the initiative could see both PNG and Australia benefit in terms of creating a sustainable economy.
Minister Abel announced the project yesterday at a press conference, which discussed the future of Australian Aid funding here in PNG.
The project will not only see water pumped to Australia, but also result in the creation of hydro-electricity throughout the Highlands region.
Discussions are currently underway regarding the proposal between parties representing both nations.
The project could see the start of a new trade market opening between PNG and Australia, moving beyond the current status that sees predominantly raw goods exported to our closest southern neighbour.
