The Australian Government has partnered with Newcrest Mining Limited to improve the delivery of maternal healthcare in New Ireland and Morobe Province.

This will be made possible by covering the cost of tuition and boarding, travel and medical insurance for nurses who are awarded an Australia Awards-Newcrest Mining Limited scholarship to study midwifery.

Scholarship awardees will study at either the St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Kokopo, East New Britain or at the Pacific Adventist University in Port Moresby.

In essence this scholarship allows nurses in these provinces to receive midwifery training they may not have had the opportunity to receive due to financial constraints and improves the maternal healthcare in their areas.

So far four nurses; twonurses from either province have been awarded with a scholarship,  and will graduate in early 2018 and thus providing much needed birthing and maternal health support when they return to their respective provinces.
