WHP LLG Elections: Arrests Made Over Destruction of Bellot Bexes

Two suspects have been arrested inthe Western Highlands Province overthe destruction of ballot boxes inthe Mul District.

Provincial Police Commander Martin Lakari said polling inthe Mul and Hagen Urban areas were suspended following disruptions.
 

For Mul Districtosupporters of candidates hijacked ballot boxes and destroyed ballot papers and also stoned vehicles. Police were able to containthe situation and apprehendedthe vehicle withthe ballot boxes and arrestedthe two suspects.

 

Polling at one rural LLG, Kingalduri, Holy Trinity, outside Mt. Hagen almost got out of hand, however lLeadersstepped in and calmedthe situation. Polling here ended without any trouble.

 

Meantime Mul and Hagen Urban were expected to re-poll today and tomorrow respectively. Western Highlands LLG election Manager Philip Talepe appealed tothe candidates to controltheir supporters and scrutineers to achieve a fair and peaceful result ofthe polling and counting.

 

PPC Lakari urged people to vote peacefully. Polling in ther Districts have been slow but peaceful.
