Vendors at Six Mile Market in Port Moresby want to know who is responsible for administering the market in the National Capital District Commission.
They told EM TV that despite paying daily market fees, they have not seen any new facilities built for them. Vendors said the market is in a crisis. Its fence was demolished last year and vendors sell their goods on the ground.
The market serves residents of Five Mile, Six Mile and the nearby Saraga Settlement; however, vendors claim it has seen no refurbishment since 2010. Vendor Alex Sibo has been selling garden produce for over 20 years.
There is, however, good news for vendors at the markets at Gordons and Tokarara.
NCDC, through its market division will slowly be upgrading its market facilities. Plans are underway to demolish the old buildings and a new building will be erected for Gordons Market.
Koki and Sabama have already seen refurbished buildings and Hohola is next.
Vendors at Koki will soon be using their new market facilities when the market opens next week. For Alex and other vendors, it is a real challenge and many want to know when a proper market will be built. They want to see more government involvement in improving their facilities through NCD Governor Powes Parkop and local MP Labi Amaiu.
