Under 20 Women’s Victory

PNG thrashed Tonga 4 to nil in the Opener of the Under 20 OFC World Cup Qualifier at Manjia Central Park in New Zealand today.

Dinna Awele put PNG on top with the opening goal as the game went true to its form.

The PNG Women Team arrived in Auckland over the weekend with their eyes locked on, earning the ultimate prize.

With no luck of acclimatizing themselves, the girls went right into the action.

The opener was against Tonga, who were out in force.

The PNG side got the game underway, but Tonga quickly reclaimed possession as they stopped the first corner kick by PNG captain Rumona Morris.

Morris’s experience extends to the Senior National Team; joining the side at the OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers in 2012, and again was handed the armband.

Tonga was possessive over the ball, handling it with style while PNG were closely monitoring their defense for possible strikes.

Informed Dinna Awele, made a classy move to find the back of the net, putting PNG in front.

The pressure was on for Tonga as they tightened their defense while working on their attacks.

Tonga’s substitution saw Illisapeti Malekamu take the field with anticipation to balance the scoreboard.

PNG continued their good form by adding a goal to the score line to 2.

As PNG were looking to put this one away with another shot flying in low and hard, Tonga’s Ma’afu dived and collected the ball.

This didn’t stop the PNG side to further advance as they went bagging to 2 more goals, ending the opener 4 to nil.

PNG will play Vanuatu on Thursday.
