In the remote areas of Kerema, people are struggling to survive, as the prolonged dry spell continues to destroy food crops and drying up water sources.
Villages along the coastline are experiencing a shortage of clean water sources, while the inland villages have no road access to come into town.
“Food and water are the main sources of survival, without that, our people are dying” says Mr Angelo, Coordinator for Kerema District Disaster.
The devastating outcome of the dry spell has displaced many villagers, with ten people dead in the month of October alone.
Since the beginning of October, Mr Simon Angelo has been dropping off rice bags in a hired helicopter, the only means for him to reach the remote villages of Kerema.
There are about 200 villages. Mr Angelo said he is not able to cover all the villages, due to lack of funds and geographical difficulties.
He was able to deliver around 1,000 10kg rice bags in the month of October.
