Out On Bail: Constable Tanda Charged for Alleged Involvement in ‘Condom Eating’ Saga

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Female probationary constable, Jacklyn Tanda, who is accused of having filmed the Condom Eating Saga, was released on bail by the Waigani committal courts this afternoon.

Magistrate Cosmos Bidar, ruled on the bail decision in Tanda’s favor on the ground that the courts have the power to accept bail before conviction.

Her application was granted on the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court. Magistrate Cosmos Bidar granted Tanda K1,000 bail under four conditions.

They include, the nominated guarantors to pay a sum of K500 each; Tanda to remain at the Morata Police Barracks until her case is over; and not to interfere with any witnesses while the police investigation continues.

Tanda made her first appearance at the committal court yesterday and was formally charged for deprivation of personal liberty and abuse of office.

The court heard yesterday that Tanda was alleged to have taken the video of a young woman being forced to chew and swallow condoms at the Boroko Police Station, on December 4th last year.

An additional charge was laid against her this afternoon for wilful doing of an indecent act to insult another person.

Tanda hid her face as she was left the court room but will return to court on 15th February.

Since her arrest, she now has three charges against her. Meanwhile, one of her two male accomplices has been located in Nipa, Southern Highlands.

He will be brought into Port Moresby where he will be formally arrested and charged.
