Schools face classroom shortage as student number increases

There is influx in student’s enrolment as a result ofthe National Government’s Tuition Fee Free Education Policy.

Holy Rosary Primary School in Port Moresby Head Teacher BenaIne’e says it’s a good approach bythe government. However, shortage of classrooms is a major problem in many schools.

Holy Rosary Primary School itself has more than nine hundred and sixty students’from elementary to primary level, with twenty nine classes.

Sincethe Free Tuition Fee Policy was introduced last year,there’s been shortage of classrooms.

This yearthe school has charged project fees, approverd bythe NCD Education Division; K156 for primary and K56 for elementary.

MrIne’e saysthe money will fundthe school’s infrastructures.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said K200 isthe minimum fee to be charged for project fees. School boards will be penalised if found to be charging aboverthe minimum fee.
