Samoa Secures Spot in Oceania Qualifying Match

by Dion Kombeng – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Samoa has secured the last spot for the Oceania Qualifying match for the FIFA World Cup in Russia in 2018 after they topped stage one.

They came out on top in the first stage of the Russia 2018 qualifiers against the Polynesian nations.

Samoa will now line up alongside Papua New Guinea, American Samoa, and Tahiti in stage two while New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Vanuatu will be in another group.

The next stage of qualifications will be held here in Port Moresby from the 28th of May to the 11th of June 2016.

The top six will advance to the third stage, to be played during 2017, with the overall winner to feature in an intercontinental play-off against a South American opponent in November 2017.

Oceania qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia is a small part of the qualification process for the region’s 11 member associations.

And now both New Zealand and Tahiti are turning their attention to mid-year matches as they compete to qualify for the World Cup.
