Recycled metal will be used at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Organizers have asked the public in Japan to give in unwanted electronic devices, as part of their contributions to the focus of sustainability for the next games.
The Organizing committee aims to collect at least 8 tons of metal that will be used to produce 5000 Olympics and Paralympics medals.
The Japanese are renowned for their recycling culture. It is known as ‘Risaikuru’. And is ingrained in what is called, ‘Mottainai’. An ancient practice of making less waste.
Mottainai teachings are that all resources should be made full use of.
Japan 2020 is seeking to be true to that tradition.
