Proud Moment for Hekari Mum

By Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

Hekari United Football Club have increased their lead at the top of the Southern Conference in the Telikom National Soccer League after their narrow 2-1 victory over PKA Rapatona.

And for one particular woman, it was a proud moment, but not because of the scoreline.

Matilda Wama had taken an early morning flight from the Kandrian-Gloucester district in West New Britain to arrive in Port Moresby in time to see her son, Wira, score. It was an emotional moment for Matilda, who hasn’t seen her son in two years due to study and playing commitments in the United States.

For Matilda, the journey had been difficult but she expressed her gratitude for Hekari club owners, Vonnie and John Kapi Natto. As with any mother, there were signs of pride in her eyes, watching him play.

Wira Wama is currently the holding midfielder with Hekari, returning to join the squad in a bid to boost their chances in the upcoming Oceania Champions League, which will include a tough opening encounter against New Zealand side, Wellington FC.

He has been included in the PNG national team as well, for the Oceania Nations Cup but that participation will depend on his availability for the country.

Nonetheless, his mother only has appreciation for what has been provided for him.
