Port Moresby is on high alert following a confrontation between students from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) and police this morning.
The Emergency section of Port Moresby General Hospital was packed to capacity with UPNG students and the public, as they watched ambulances ferry in the injured.
Port Moresby is in shutdown. PMV buses and taxis have stopped operating and schools and business houses closed soon after shots were heard fired through many parts of the city.
It was an uneasy sight at the hospital, filled with crowds as they watched ambulances drive in with injured students.
Those who were at the hospital were university students, concerned parents, PMV bus drivers and crew members, taxi drivers and members of the public.
Meanwhile, at the Gerehu General Hospital, the main gate was locked in order to allow doctors to stabilise the injured students and then move them to the Port Moresby General Hospital.
While EMTV was on the scene, another ambulance was also seen leaving the hospital to POM GEN.
In other parts of Port Moresby, the streets of Morata 2 were in lock down as crowds gathered around the bus stop. According to eyewitnesses there was a shootout in the area involving police.
