Port Moresby Technical College Facing Accommodation Problem

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

A small student protest was held this morning at Port Moresby Technical College (POMTECH) to demand answers of the current state of accommodation the technical college is facing.

The college has only 4 dormitories that cater for over 500 students. This has forced the college to house students off campus with male students at the PNG IPA College at Waigani, and females at the Jubilee University at Rainbow near Gerehu.

Due to the Pacific Games, students living at IPA have been forced to move back to POMTECH. This is causing problems for the college as it does not have enough boarding space to cater for the entire student population.

The college is also claiming misappropriation of over K1million that was allocated to build new dormitories in 2008.  Since then, nothing has been built.

Student leader, Gideon Tamhar, on behalf of the student body urged the Office of Higher Education and Minister responsible to investigate the missing K1million that was put to build new dormitories.

Meanwhile College Principle, Allan Tira, said a classroom will be used as a temporary dormitory until proper measures are done.
