Opposition leader, Don Polye says the recent rife in police shootings and brutality in the country is unbecoming of the disciplinary force.
Polye called on the police hierarchy and the government to take a bold move in clamping down and disciplining ‘rogue’ officers, and “breed a new stock” of officers.
He says the public cannot live in fear with the on-going police behaviour.
The opposition leader expressed disappointment over the recent shootings in Hanuabada and Lae, which has caused unnecessary grief and tension in the country.
Mr Polye said the force needs a shake-up and total commitment to regain the public’s trust and confidence.
He said the police hierarchy must consider new training and up-skilling of a new force to carry Papua New Guinea into the future, as security will be a topic of concern with the country hosting major events in the Pacific.
The opposition leader also called for the set-up of an independent inquiry into police brutality cases in the country because most are left unattended with officers walking free.
He added that he is prepared to work with Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill and all stakeholders to shape Papua New Guinea’s police force.
