Former Kumul Inspire Rugby League in Local District

by Shane Saroya – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Micheal Mark, a former Kumul, has played in numerous international tournaments for PNG and in local competitions.

After he hung up his boots in 2011, Mark has set himself the daunting task of sacrificing his time and energy to develop Rugby League in his Local District, Sine Sine Yongumul.

The former Kumul said, back in the early days he used to walk three hours from his village to the town, just to play rugby league.

But that has all changed, a little over a decade later, PNG is fast evolving into a developed nation even though the passion for rugby league is pretty much the same.

Mark was invited several times to play in the prestigious Inter City Cup but he humbly declined the invitation, with one goal in mind which is devoting his time to his people and to the sport he loves.

Wendy Kohun was one of the people who supported and initiated the idea of affiliating the Sine Suai Rugby League competition under PNG RFL.

As a coach and mentor, Mark sacrifices most of his time to develop his team, and it paid off.

The Sine Suai Brothers went on to make their debut appearance in the highlands zone trails, and won all their matches including the finals, ultimately to be crowned champions of the Highlands region.
