More Police For Rural Areas

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Member for Bulolo, Sam Basil, today attended the police passing out ceremony in the nation’s capital, Port Moresby.

When congratulating the recruits, he said more police officers need to be stationed in rural areas to ensure police presence is felt throughout the country.

Basil, who has been vocal about policing, has a bigger plan to see how police presence can be felt in all the rural commands.

He said each local level government should have at least ten police personnel, and must be managed by area managers.

In the Bulolo electorate, there are 30 regular police and 70 reservists.

Basil said his electorate needs more policemen and women, as Bulolo is seeing an influx of people, due to development there.

He also said that the current ratio of police to people does not meet the United Nation’s standard, which is one police officer to 450 people.
