Lae Police have apprehended three suspects, one of whom was allegedly involved in the brutal attack on a Chinese businessman in Madang.
The attack caught on bank security camera was done in full view of the public in the centre of Madang.
It is understood that the suspects were planning to carry out an armed robbery on a major supermarket in Eriku, when they were caught.
A video circulated on social media last year showing a Chinese businessman, dragged by his collar on to the pavement in Madang and slashed with bush knives after he refused to let go of a money bag.
The man, who police say uses two identities, was caught yesterday in Lae. Police were on a police patrol when they spotted the three behaving suspiciously.
Police monitored them and caught them at Eriku when they were trying to enter a Hire Car premises.
Lae Metropolitan Commander, Anthony Wagambie Jr, said one of the suspects had three sketch maps of a major supermarket in Madang. Police said the maps show where to enter and where to go if they executed the robbery.
It was later discovered that the three suspects came into Lae to hire a vehicle which would then be used in Madang for the robbery.
Madang CID has confirmed that the three suspects have been wanted for some time for a string of robberies.
In another incident today, police caught another three teenagers with homemade guns, who were on their way to commit a robbery.
These three have been previously convicted for the same offences.
Although they have served their time, today they were caught committing the same offense.
Lae Metropolitan Commander, Anthony Wagambie Jr, has commended his men for good work.
There was no tip-off. The suspects were caught through observation and good police work.
Yesterday and today, they prevented what could have been a well-planned robbery in Madang. Wagambie has also warned hire car operators to be careful in hiring cars as criminals are now resorting to use hire vehicles to carryout major robberies.
