PNGRFL Announces New CEO

By Skola Sengi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) has announced Bob Cutmore as the organisation’s new CEO.

After the surprising resignation of former CEO, Brad Tassel, in March this year, Shane Morris was appointed as Acting CEO. He now returns to his post as PNGRFL Operations Manager.

Upon the announcement of his appointment, Cutmore said “PNG Hunters have been a ruling success, Digicel Cup [is] a success but we really need to have a critical look at our affiliations and the grassroots game. We probably don’t do enough there.”

“The most important thing is to review the current season, look at the season 2015 amongst all affiliated leagues and registration and see what’s happening there, what’s gone right, what’s gone wrong and what the PNGRFL office has done’, said Cutmore.

In his recent visit to PNG to witness the inaugural Melanesain Cup, International Rubgy Football League Development Officer, Tas Baiteri, was confident that the Melanesain Cup clash will elevate the standard of rugby league in the country.

“It’s pretty similar to the model of the NRL and the Super League in the UK.

“Not that we want to copy it, we want to show that the Pacific can do its own version and I think it will get better,” said Baiteri.

He further added “There are things that we need to improve. And I think we need to find the right time to play the game, rather than the end of the year maybe as a pre-season event.”
