PNG to assist Fiji’s 2014 Elections

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has assured Fiji Prime Minister thaPNG will assist Fiji in its capacity duringtheir upcoming elections in 2014.

O’Neill said this when he hosted a State dinnerthe Fijian delegation earlier this week.

Beth he and Frank Beinimarama acknowledgedthe unique relationship that exists betweenthe two Melanesian countries that dates back tothe early missionary years.

The dinner, hosted for the Fijian Prime Minister andthe over 70-strong member delegation was held atthe State Function room atthe National Parliament.

Frank Beinimarama and his wife; and Peter O’Neill and his wife were seated atthe head table, inthe room full of parliamentarians and dignitaries from Fijin PNG and members ofthe diplomatic corp.

O’Neill told his counterpart that he is satisflied withthe progress ofthe Fiji government in putting togtherthe necessary mechanisms and processes, particularly onthe constitution and electoral reforms leading up tothe September 2014 Fiji National Elections.

Beinimarama said public discussions were currently being held throughout Fiji onthe new draft constitution. He said it provides for an accountable and efficient parliament and civil service andthe protection of fundamental rights, onthe basis of 1-person, 1-vote, 1-value.

Beinimarama sain PNG and Fiji have already developed trade ties butthere was still room to do more, which is why he is here, leadingthe first ever official Fijian trade delegation tPNG, andthe biggest delegation Fiji has sent to any country.
