Due to the ongoing El Nino weather pattern ravaging many parts of the countru, power outages being experienced in Port Moresby are being triggered by the heavy build-up of dust interrupting power supply on distribution lines at Motukea and Baruni.
PNG Power has set in motion a plan to lessen dust accumulation on all distribution lines within the city, which will result in lesser power outages.
The effect of the dry weather is also taking a toll on water levels at the Sirinumu Dam in Central Province.
The water level at the Sirinumu has dropped to 38.4 per cent which is 130 million cubic metres. Port Moresby residents are advised to minimise the use of electricity.
“Electricity consumers are asked to switch off any electronic supply that is not in use, turn off lights in rooms that are empty, and air conditioning units at 24 degrees centigrade or above,” said PNG Power’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, John Yanis.
