PNG Defence Force ReLooks at Height Requirements for New Female Recruits

The Papua New GuineaDefense Force will review its height requirement for female recruits.

 

Chief of Personnel Colonel Mark Goina saidthe required height of 165 centimeters will be relaxed to an average of 160 centimetres.

 

Colonel Goina said this should allow more females to jointhe army.

The recruitment height requirement inthe army for females is 165 centimetres.

Colonel Mark Goina saidthe reason why many females were not recruited overthe years including this year was becausethey didn’trsquo;t meet this requirement.

Colonel Goina said many parents called onthe army to relax this restriction.

The Chief of Personnel saidthe height requirement is vital because complementsthe weight a soldier carries in his or her back pack.

Government has taskedthe army to recruit 5 thousand by year 2015, approximately 300 every year.

Only 120 were recruited for the first batch this year.

“We are trying to removerthe height restriction to attaract females to jointhe force. We are hoping that withthe review ofthe MPA, or Manual of Personnel Administration, we are hoping that that will happen…”  Colonel Goina said.

Despitethe shortfall in uniforms and training equipments, poor infrastructure and logistical support,the force is adamant it will meet government’s demands.
