While there are opportunities provided by the Papua New Guinean Government towards all elite athletes both in the country and overseas, the Papua New Guinea Athletes Commission serves a special purpose. With its role as an advocates for athletes’ welfare, and ‘life-after-sports’ initiatives, the main objective now is to target the PNG Games, to carry out awareness on the type of support that are provided to elite athletes.
While the Athletes Commission’s main focus is on elite athletes, representative Chris Amini, says PNG Games is the foundation of every elite athlete in the country.
He says, many new talents come through the PNG Games and it’s time the grassroots competition is aware of the benefits available to them through the Commission.
Some of the roles of the Athletes commission are to provide education opportunities to athletes who can’t read or write, advocate for them, on issues they face or struggle with, and even career opportunities, for life after sports. The PNG Athletes Commission is looking forward to this year’s events, both regional and international.
