PMV Drivers and Public Ignore ICCC Prices

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

The newly imposed PMV and taxi fares set by the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) yesterday has been slammed by motorists and the public in Port Moresby.

Bus crews and taxi drivers say the new prices are not worth it compared to vehicle maintenance and the cost of business.

Most say the transport system in the city is a priority factor in helping the huge workforce in both the private and public sector. John, a bus driver for 18 years, says both passengers and bus crews will definitely ignore the new set prices.

Taxi fares will also see slight changes, with a maximum flag rate of K1.70 and a maximum of K2.30 per kilometre.

In a statement on Wednesday, ICCC Commissioner Dr Billy Manoka said all issues surrounding PMV operations were considered before the rates were announced. Commuters in Port Moresby will pay 90 toea, with 80 toea for Lae commuters.

The public say the 90 toea rate is not worth it because bus crews and taxi drivers still charge their own rates.

However, Commissioner Manoka urged all PMV and bus operators to comply with the rates or face legal action for charging excess fares.
