Olsem Wanem – Episode 30, 2014

In this episode:

In Papua New Guinea People with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to participate in society.

In addition to this, they are often invisible to service providers. Jerry, a person with visual impairment highlighted some of the challenges faced by people with disabilities.

According to National Disability Resource and Advocacy Center the status of people living with disabilities is extremely low and their voices often go unheard.

Olsem Wanem also visited several organizations and people who are determined to work alongside and address the rights of persons with disabilities. We visited the St John Blind Center and the Kalang Services.

We also look at infant and maternal deaths. Infant and maternal deaths remain a major health challenge in Papua New Guinea. Statistics shows that there are more babies dying then surviving during critical birth situations all over the country.

Many of those affected are women in rural areas with limited access to basic antenatal health care services.
