Olsem Wanem – Episode 26, 2014

In this episode:

The Madang provincial council of women has raised alarm on an increase in the number of rapes and incest cases involving children between the ages of 5 and 8 years old.

This comes amidst the economic boom within the province that has seen an influx of people coming into Madang town.

The Madang police recently opened a new family and sexual violence office to deal with each backlog of sexual related offence cases in the province.

About 200 kilometers from Madang is Lae, PNG’s industrial hub.

Cases of sexual related offences are no different to that of Madang. The Lae’s sexual offence unit has been struggling to attend to at least 8 cases of sexual related offences each day.

While the officers are making sure that each case makes it into the courtroom, they are also taking heed of much bigger problems that lay ahead.

Statistics of sexual related offences is expected to rise.

And this is expected to stem from the growing number of people flocking into the city in search for urban conveniences.
