PNGDF & Australian Forces End Relief Exercise

A major Defence force training exercise took place this week to strengthen planning and delivery for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance in times of crises.

Known as Exercise Long Reach, the training saw members of the PNG Defence Force with counterparts from the Australian Defence Force develop contingency plans as a proactive tool to be used when disaster strikes.

Lead Facilitator from the Australian Army, Major Paul Bogue, said the exercise is paramount for the government to engage in.

A key focus of the exercise was supporting of the development of PNG Defence Force capacity as a first responder across national and regional crises events in line with the recent released PNG Defence White Paper.

The exercise also involved international mentors from Japan, New Zealand and the United States including Red Cross, World Vision, churches and international NGO’s.

The participants presented the outcome of their planning activities, analyzing different disaster scenarios and weather events.

Commander Toropo is confident the exercise will be implemented successfully, as officers apply mobilization, response and recovery processes when disaster strikes.

Exercise Long Reach is conducted biannually in the country. The exercise concluded today at the Grand Papua Hotel in Port Moresby.
