Official Accounts Opening Delayed Due to Rodents

By Serah Aupong – EM TV, Port Moresby

Rodents are responsible for the deferral of the official opening of accounts for Papua New Guinea.

This was announced today by Finance Minister, James Marape. A cable that ensures the smooth running of the systems within Vulupindi Haus was eaten by rats over the holidays.

A bemused Finance Minister made the announcement today at a press conference, shedding light on the official “system failure” notice at Vulupindi Haus.

“Apparently rats ate through the cables is what I have been advised,”  Marape said after announcing that the official opening of the accounts, which was scheduled for today, would be postponed to next week. Meanwhile, people have been queuing up since Monday this week to sort out payments, especially for birth certificates, visas and passports.

Deputy Secretary Samuel Penias said after the press conference, he is hopeful a replacement cable will be in place by this afternoon.

As of 3pm this afternoon, the cable has been replaced; however, the signal between Morauta Haus and Vulupindi Haus is very weak. Officers will continue to work tirelessly to ensure this is matter is resolved.
