New board for the Public Employees Association

by Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

Public servants welfare and salary problems are some of the pressing issues to be addressed by the new Board of Public Employees Association (PEA).

PEA is the biggest union in the country, with almost over 10,000 members from government departments and provincial governments.

The new board is headed by President Emma Faiteli, who replaces former PEA President, Anna Igo.

The Public Employees Association is the largest public sector union in the country. It is housed within the Fincorp Building at Waigani in the nation’s capital.

At the declaration of the new board, it was announced that Emma Faiteli would be the new President for PEA. She is not new to the union movement.

Having worked with the Department of Personnel Management for seven years, she wants to come up with solutions for better working solutions for public servants.

Management skills in running such a huge union body is an asset and Emma Faiteli believes that she can extend the worries of her members to management level.

Working alongside her is Vice Deputy President of the Public Employees Association, Polapin Kilangit. As a long-time employee of PNG Power, he is also familiar with the problems faced by union members

One of the aims of PEA is to increase membership, which saw a decline over the years. It will also continue to push for better working conditions for PEA’s public servant members.
