With the National Boxing Championships to be held in New Ireland later this month, the National Capital District (NCD) boxing organisation will be hosting the second of its sparing competitions to prep fighters for the event.
NCD will be aiming to send the best squad that it has, knowing that stiff competition will come from the New Guinea Islands region in AROB and also from the Kairuku Amateur Boxing Association as well.
Team NCD have been training at the high performance training centre with a few aspects such as boxer agility, strength and conditioning all being worked on.
The final squad will be selected from this Sunday’s sparing competition, where the selection committee will finalise the best senior fighters to attend the nationals.
All boxers are required to make their weight to fight in their correct division, ranging from lightweight to super heavy weight.
PNG Boxing Union President, John Avira, is adamant the tournament will be a success, especially with the number of clubs becoming more prominent.
NCD head coach Mark Keto and assistant coach Kevan Baki are both working on identifying their best senior boxers with novices, not a part of the competition.
The final team will be selected after this Sunday’s sparing competition which will be hosted at the Honk Kiaps residence.
