Multi Sports Complex To Open Soon

The Murray Barracks Multi- Sports Complex is set to open to the athletes and the general public early next month.

Sport Minister, Justin Tkatchenko visited the complex recently, and was pleased to see the facility soon to be ready for athletes’ preparation for the 2015 Pacific Games. It was in a dilapidated state when we first visited the site.

But now, things have changed. The makeover has put a new look to the facility. A newly refurbished gym area is in its final stages. Weightlifting and other indoor sporting activities will be catered for.

The outdoor facilities include the volleyball and netball courts and the 25 meter- long swimming pool ready to be used. Other amenities, including ablution blocks and changing rooms, are on the way to completion.

The work on the swimming pool was given to Nipuks Construction Limited, a local construction company. The hall, courts and the Gym areas were contracted to L & A construction. The Work on this multi–sports complex, is worth K6 Million from the PNG Sports Foundation

Minister Tkatchenko stressed the importance of looking after the government funded facilities, and he said he wouldn’t like to see it go back to where it was before. Through the partnership with the Defence Ministry, the work is near completion and will open to the general public, early next month.
