The University of Goroka has become a leader in many respects.
Most recently, UOG has increased its focus on producing music teachers.
The man behind the drive is Richard Mogu, a former student of Sanguma great, the late Tony Subam.
Mogu says music is fundamental in expressing Papua New Guinea’s identity.
Richard Mogu is not as well-known as many other Papua New Guinean artists, but he is, arguably one of the finest musicians that PNG Arts school has ever produced.
In music circles, he is better known as one of the best base players in Papua New Guinea. He has performed both locally and internationally with well-known Papua New Guinean artists.
Richard has come to call the University of Goroka home in the last few years as Head of UOG Music department.
He is teaching young musicians how to express what’s inside of them, through music. Music is about identity he says. It speaks the yearnings of the souls that words can’t express.
As much as possible, Richard tries to maintain his identity as a Papua New Guineans Musician, using traditional instruMen’s from all over the country.
