Media Restricted from entering Asylum Seekers’ Sites

Authorities in Manus are refusing to allow media personnel into any of the sites where asylum seekers are being held.

This includes the Lombrum Detention Centre and East and West Lorengau Transit Sites.

There is a temporary restriction for media personnel or photograph taking of any of the three sites.

The Manus Detention Center remains restricted to the public while security personnel are patrolling the roads leading into both the East and Wear Lorengau Transit Centers to prevent media personnel from taking pictures.

Two weeks ago, security guards at one of the sites, forced journalists of an international media to delete footage they took of the sites.

This week, a camera man of one of the local TV Stations was also forced to delete videos he took of the West Lorengau Transit Center.

Commanding Officer of PNG Defence Force Naval Base in Lombrum had explained that most of the asylum seekers were processed as refugees and said that was a security concern for the nearby public. However, there are no formal explanations from other security personnel on the media restrictions.
