Manus Day

The Manus community was out in full color yesterday to commemoratetheir provincial day.

 

The beat ofthe garamut could be heard all around as friend and families froPNG’s island province came togther to show off each ther’s uniqueness in traditional costume and dance styles.

The 34th Manus Daycelebration was held atthe Besini Softball grounds in Port Moresby.

 

Thousands fromthe Manus community, friend and spectators turned up to catch a glimpse oPNG’s infamous traditional Manus dance; many were lured bythe beats ofthe garamut.

 

This year’s Manus Daywas special. President ofthe University oPNG’s Manus Students Association, John Minei, said it wasthe first time for their community members ofthe Seventh DayAdventist Church to jointhem.

 

Manus Dayfalls onthe 25th of August. However, a change was made this year bythe organizing committee to hostthe event on a day where all fellow Manus islanders could participate.

 

“This isthe first change that we have made, to commemoratethe day on August 26th so thatthe Seventh DayAdventist community could participate,” said Mr Minei.
 

More than 50 stalls were set up aroundthe softball diamond. Many tookthe opportunity to raise funds by selling food items, printed t-shirts and traditional items.

 

Organizingthe Manus Daycelebration has always been an initiative ofthe Manus Students association of UPNG. President Minei hoped to change this trend to encourage more participation from fellow wantoks (people).

 

He saidthe UPNG’students’have always sacrificedtheir study time to organize an event that brings togtherthe whole Manus community togther once a year.

The best part ofthe day came around when traditional groups tookthe field to entertain spectators.
