Manam Islanders in dire need of drinking water and food supplies

By Martha Louise – EMTV News, Madang

The recent eruption on Manam Island has left many more homeless with no food and clean drinking water.

According to the clan leader of one of the villages badly affected, Banabas Manabung, they are still waiting on government officials including the disaster office to assist them. He said since Saturday’s eruption, most of the islanders are still awaiting evacuation.

The locals described the latest eruption as the most destructive, by far the worse since the eruption on August 25th.

Manabung said food gardens, homes and drinking wells are all covered in ashes, and mudstones from the eruption.

Two villages on the island Kolang and Bokure were completely destroyed.

It’s been two days and the people are in desperate need of clean drinking water and food.
