Man Wounded from Tear Gas Fired by Police at Koki Market

One man became the victim of a tear gas shoot out by police, at the Koki Market in Port Moresby, this morning.

Corey Maki, from Gulf province sustained a wound to his head after he claimed police opened fire, using tear gas at betel-nut vendors.

Maki registered a complaint at the Badilli Police Station before fronting up at the EMTV News Office to tell of his ordeal.

“I was at the Koki Market when a group of police men came and threw tear gas at the vendors,” Maki said. He said he was there to buy betel-nut.

“I was standing some good metres away from the police but there was this one police man who pointed the gun towards me and fired straight at me. I ducked down but it hit me on my head,” Maki recalled.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Benjamin Turi, is yet to comment on this matter.

However, the plate numbers of the two alleged vehicles were registered as ZPD 334 and ZPD 343.
