Locals take initiative to address environmental issues

A story onthe environment; A cleanathon at Vanagi settlement in Port Moresby is near completion. And a sea wall being constructed along one part ofthe village will take some time.

It’s a community initiative that also includesthe planting of mangrovers alongthe water front.

Vanagi settlement is located at Badili inthe Port Moresby South electorate. There are eighty seven houses with approximately two hundred and twenty families residing.

A month ago,the residents begantheir coastal clean-up campaign undePNG Gardner, in conjunction withthe National Planning office.

Chairman Walo Keto saidthey are waiting on Moresby South member and Sport Minister Justin Tkatchenko to informthem of whenthey can begin planting.

The mangrovers will be planted along this area.

Efforts to build seawalls have prevented rubbish from washing up under homes. The seawall will continue futher downthe settlement.

Chairman Keto is appealing to business houses to supply used tyres sothey can continuethe initiative.

Meantime,the community has imposed a fine of K5 on any family who disposes rubbish in undesignated areas.

This mover has maintained cleanliness sincethe campaign began.
