The Constitutional and Law Reform Commission has also been tasked to look at reformingthe laws governing city planning, growth and urban development.
Half a million kina has been allocated to carry out this exercise.
The directive came about following reports of ethnic clashes in Lae where citizens were killed, thousands of kina worth of properties destroyed and a large number of people displaced.
The terms of reference-9 will givethe publicthe opportunity to address issues of urban development andthe effects it has on relationships among ethnic groups.
The 1971 Cities Act will be looked at and changes made to it’so that it takes into account societal changes.
Provincial towns and urban districts will be targeted as well. Members of parliament representingthese electorates are encouraged to work withthe commission to find solutions.
If laws governing urban development need to be reviewed,the commission will do so. The toR9 exercise will begin next month.
