Land Minister Responds to Ela Beach Saga

by Fabian Hakalits – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Minister for Lands, Benny Allan, yesterday responded to reports claiming parts of Ela Beach had been sold.

In a press conference, Mr Allan told media the land was acquired through a lease by developer Awaks Holdings and due processes were followed.

The lease title was granted in May this year, since the developer Awaks Holdings expressed interest in 2009 to give a facelift to Ela Beach.

The Lands Minister said Papua New Guineans must be given opportunities under the SME policy.

The National Minister was not happy with comments made earlier by Moresby South MP, Justin Tkatchenko, that the land was sold claiming he misunderstood the lease.

He called on Mr Tkatchenko to discuss this matter on a round table rather than solving it with the Prime Minister.
