Lae Secondary Calls for Action After Car Kills Two Students

By Bethanie Harriman – EM TV News, Lae

Lae Secondary School Principal, Christopher Raymond, has called on authorities to investigate and prosecute the driver behind the wheel of a vehicle that killed two of his student over the weekend.

Lae Secondary’s tight-knit community wants tougher laws on drink driving, more Police roadblocks and those responsible for the deaths to be dealt with accordingly.

“I am speaking on behalf of the two girls who are from my school, that’s too much on them, apart from the proper authorities stepping up on what they are supposed to be doing on checking up on drunk driving, those who are responsible for these deaths, must be held responsible,” said Raymond.

Police officers who inspected the vehicle on Saturday said there was evidence of drink driving.

The two girls were killed, alongside a relative of one of the girls, when a car driven by a man understood to be drunk collided with the group.

Grade 12 Class Matron, Esther Ehava, said they were sensible students who could do tasks independently, listened to advice but ask for it when needed.

“I told the class to pray for strength so we can get through the exam next week,” said Ehava.

Teachers fear the psychological stress on the Grade 12 students, and have arranged for a counselor to attend to those students who require assistance.

In a separate incident, a driver also understood to be drunk, ran over four women including a mother with her baby. They were a family walking on Lae’s Cassia Crescent.

Three were killed, however the baby and mother survived with the mother’s leg though having to be amputated.

Eyewitnesses said the car was travelling at a very high speed.
