Northern Province boosted to fight FSV

Northern Province is now ready to increase access to justice for survivors of family and sexual violence with the recent official opening of the Popondetta Police Family and Sexual Violence (FSV) Unit.

Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Ms Deborah Stokes, said the facilities will respond to FSV cases in an appropriate and sensitive manner.

Ms Stokes also handed over two boats and a vehicle to assist the Oro Provincial Police Command and the Provincial Village Court Office to conduct operations and inspections to coastal communities.

The FSV Units have designated police officers WHO’support survivors of family and sexual violence to report cases, obtain Interim Protection Orders and access counselling, hospital care and safe housing.

The FSV Unit, boats and vehicle are part of a four hundred fifty thousand support package for Oro Province through the PNG-Australia Law and Justice Partnership.

Over fourteen FSV Units have been established in twelve other provinces since 2009 with the support of the Australian Government.
