Lae District Education Manager, Laga Kaumu, says schools through the district and the Provincial Education Division are paying close attention to various bouts of unrest throughout the city.
Following last week’s school suspensions, which have since been lifted, teachers and education officials are still concerned regarding the safety of their students.
Schools in Lae may face another suspension depending on the situation of student unrest at the University of Technology.
This includes schools scattered near Independence Drive, which leads past the university.
Kaumu says the district education authority is on alert to instruct schools to dismiss classes again if the situation in Lae continues.
Last Wednesday, more than 20 primary schools in the city were suspended following student fights that broke out at the University of Technology.
The Provincial Education Division approved the suspension as part of cautionary measures in light of the student unrests.
This week, students have since returned to class, with schools confirming normal class attendances.
