by Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

Lae’s Urban Development Plan was discussed today in a joint consultation with the Morobe Provincial Administration, and other stakeholders.

Morobe Provincial Administrator, Patilias Gamato, said the province’s adminisatration will work with the views of customary landowners.

Japan International Cooperation Agency will plan the Lae-Nadzab Urbanisation.

Today, the Morobe Provincial Administration, the public, and other stakeholders met with JICA to discuss Lae’s Urban Development Plan.

The first public meeting has also attracted views from Ahi Landowners, who are traditional landowners of Lae.

The Lae Urban Development Plan for 2015 to 2025 will cover a range of infrastructure, road, and industrial development projects.

Morobe Provincial Administrator, Patilias Gamato, says Morobe’s 10- year development plan includes the views of customary landowners before project implementations.

“Most of the developments that are going to take place are not going to be on government land, they are planned on customary land,” Gamato said.

JICA’s Chief Representative, Sugiyama Shigeru, at the meeting this morning said the team aims to achieve better results in this development plan.

“With JICA’s support, we’d like to come up with a plan which is achievable and implementable in 10 years,” Shigeru said.

Amongst the audience was Benson Nablu, a community leader at Morobe’s Ahi area.

He says people must see the initiative as a positive development for the province.

Lae being the industrial hub of the country offers much potential for more developments that can enhance the province.
