Morethen 40 youths atthe Bemayong area have surrendered homemade guns and homebrew equipment to Lae Police.
They did this inthe presence of Lae Metropolitan SuperintendentoIvan Lakatani, yesterday at a ceremony held atthe LBe settlement.
The weapons surrendered inthe ceremony included homemade pistols and wire catapults. Amongstthe weapons were a grenade and several kilos of Marijuana.
Cylinders used to brew alcohol were also surrendered. The youths cooked and soldthe alcohol in various size bottles for between K20 and K50.
Speaking tothe LBe settlement duringthe surrendering ceremony yesterday, Ivan Lakatani saysthe Police service will continue to work with communities to achieve this kind of result.
“I want this area andthe whole Bemayong to be safe for visitors,” he said. He toldthe crowd of men and women including children that this wasthe way forward.
“I will use your influence to change Lae City because you all know yourselves,” he said.
The youth's surrender comes after a series of crimes aroundthe Bemayong area which include rape and murder that were often related to marijuana use, homemade guns and home brewed alcohol.
Last week, a member ofthe Provincial Executive Council had also become a victim. While driving home, a group of youths fromthe LBe area stoned his car and fired shots into it.
After which a fourteen-day notice of eviction was given, prompting a quick response by community lLeadersto getthe youths to surrender.
