Vendors at Port Moresby’s Koki Market have expressed concerns about the lack of market space. This comes as more vendors from other suburbs in NCD are moving to the temporary Koki Market to sell their produce.
This is a similar case felt by many vendors in other markets of Port Moresby.
Koki vendors now fear the opening of the market will attract more vendors from other suburbs, making it harder for them to find space, and harder for them to sell their produce.
Since the market was demolished last year, vendors had resorted to selling garden food on a piece of land just opposite the main market.
The newly-built market has 36 stalls, and aims to accommodate sellers who will be selling garden food only.
Koki will be the third market in NCD to undergo a refurbishment exercise, and has received joint funding from local MP Justin Tkatchenko, and NCD Governor Powes Parkop.
The market promotes healthy hygiene and there will be strict inspection on what type of food vendors bring to sell. The market is set to open next week.
In the meantime, the Koki Fish Market is still undergoing construction.
