Kila Pat: Register Your Customary Land

by Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Lands and Physical Planning Secretary Romilly Kila Pat says the department is pushing the National Land Development Program to evade illegal land grabbing.

He made this statement following the handing over of land title certificates to three successful Incorporated Land Groups (ILGs).

The three successful applicants were from Wewak Urban in East Sepik, and Madang and Karamui in Simbu province. Leo Kaiwok from Urboi ILG says, most customary landowners are being pushed aside through backdoor deals and have become strangers on their own land.

“I’m happy with the certificate to start proper business and invest in proper land deals,” Kaiwok said.

The issuing of three land certificates today brings the total to 9 land titles given so far. Two more customary land groups have submitted their applications and are awaiting approval from the Customary Land Division.

The Lands and Physical Planning Department is implementing the National Land and Development Program through its Customary Land Division to help landowners secure and register their land.
