Haus & Home – Episode 35, 2013

 

We feature Orchid Growing, and filmthe entire show around thistheme inthe good faith of promotingthe up-coming annual Orchid Show.

Papua New Guineaholdsthe leading world record in relation to its rich bio-diversity and unique flora and fauna. One species in particular that has caughtthe world’s attention arethe varieties of Orchids that are found in PNG They have fascinated botanists, gardeners and hobbyists worldwide. The predominantly untouched rainforest terrain,the different climatic conditions varying betweenthe cool highlands andthe humid lowlands plus a conducive habitat provide a catalyst for the abundance of orchid species.

 

ThPNG Orchid Society has brought tothe forethe remarkable brilliance and beatuty of this exotic plant species through its annual orchid show, held atthe Sir Rabbie Namaliu Garden located withinthe National Parliament grounds in Port Moresby. A total of well over 5,000 plants get displayed ether just for show or for sale and never fails to wow visitors of all ages.  The vibrancy of colours and sizes of Orchids are unmatched and out of a little over 30,000 orchid species that exist inthe world todayPNG proudly boasts that 3,200 of those species are found in PNG The most popular beingthe epiphytic Dendrobium family.

 

We get to feature throughout Haus & Home a spectacular Orchid garden owned by one oPNG’s avid orchid gardeners, andthPNG Orchid Society’s Vice Presidentolawyer, Steven Kami. Steven maybe of Tongan origin but he is known as one of a few adopted sons oPNG .

 

Steven invit’s us to his home and shares his passion forPNG Orchids, and shows off his envious collection of well of orchid species. He is quitethe story teller when it comes to orchids.

 

Also in this episode Irene, formally introduces her new co-hostoSharlene Gawi.
